An African surfer jumps a wave, embodying the South African surf brand MAMI WATA

The Brand

Mami Wata, the clothing and accessories brand, was born in 2017 to be a creative force for good in Africa, producing and supporting African youth, African talent, African makers. Mami Wata is a symbol of African empowerment: Africa is reclaiming its history and culture, as surfing was invented on the shores of Africa.

From Madagascar to Morocco, Liberia to Mozambique, Mami Wata is the African water spirit who appears in the form of a mermaid. She is a symbol of fertility, a protector of women and children, a guardian of sea creatures and natural environments.

The Story

The Mami Wata surf brand was created out of love and conviction. Love for surfing, design and Africa. The brand's conviction lies in the power of African surfing.

Today, Mami Wata is launching its first fragrance, with irresistible oceanic and African roots and evocations.

Neo-Animism is a perfume that is alive with meaning and African oceans. This fragrance was created from two dominant notes: First, the minerals of the African oceans which capture the brand's relationship and experience of water. Secondly, the typical scent of the well-known "green soap", which reflects the daily experience of surfers in southern Africa.

The Founders

In 2016 three South Africans, Andy Davis, Nick Dutton and Peet Pienaar had a conversation about the need for a proudly African global surf brand. The business launched in 2017.  The mission at Mami Wata is to be a creative force for good in Africa.
